Motion-controlled games used to need special hardware, like a Kinect camera or a Wii remote. Today a regular laptop webcam and a web browser can do something similar for simple games. Here is how it works on MoveVerse and how to get the smoothest tracking.
What happens when you select "Enable Camera"
- The browser asks permission to use the camera. Nothing happens without that permission.
- A hand-tracking model (Google's open-source MediaPipe Hand Landmarker) loads into the page and runs on the device's own processor or graphics chip.
- For every camera frame, the model finds 21 points on the hand, like the wrist, the knuckles, and the fingertips.
- MoveVerse blends the palm center and the index fingertip into one steady pointer. The palm keeps the pointer stable, and the fingertip keeps it where kids expect to "touch".
- A smoothing filter removes small jitters when the hand is still while staying responsive during fast swipes. That pointer then catches stars, swings paddles, or steers a dolphin.
If a browser can't run the hand model, MoveVerse falls back to simple motion detection, which follows the area of the image where something is moving.
What happens to the video?
On MoveVerse, camera frames are analyzed inside the browser and are not uploaded to any server. When a phone is used as the camera via QR code, the phone sends only movement coordinates (two numbers) to the game screen, not the video. You can switch to touch, mouse, or keys at any time to turn the camera off. More detail is on the privacy page.
Tips for smooth tracking
- Light the player's front. A window behind the child makes the hand a dark silhouette. Light should face the player.
- Mind the distance. About one to two arm's lengths from the camera works well. Too close and the hand leaves the frame; too far and it becomes too small to find.
- Use one hand. The game follows one hand. A second hand can confuse it, so keep the other one down.
- Use Small range reach. The default "Small range" setting maps a comfortable middle area of the camera view to the whole screen, so kids don't have to stretch to the edges.
- Watch the preview. A small camera preview shows the hand outline. Its border is green when tracking, amber for a brief dropout, and pink while it searches. If tracking is lost for about a second and a half, the game pauses and waits.
Best games for camera play
- Star Grab: broad reaching, very forgiving.
- Nova Volley: rewards smooth, controlled hand movement.
- Orbit Runner: precise aiming through 3D rings.

Questions grown-ups ask
Do webcam games upload my child’s video?
MoveVerse does not. Hand tracking runs inside the browser, and camera frames stay on the device.
Is it like a Kinect?
It is a similar idea, controlling a game by moving, but it uses an ordinary webcam and tracks one hand rather than the full body. No console or extra hardware is needed.
Why does the game pause during camera play?
If the hand is out of view for about a second and a half, the game pauses so nothing is lost. Show the hand again and press Keep Playing, or switch to touch, mouse, or keys.
Which browsers support camera hand tracking?
Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Safari, and Firefox. On older devices the game automatically falls back to simpler motion detection.
