Getting young kids to brush can be a nightly negotiation. A little play beforehand can help. Hippo Brush is a free browser game where kids clean a very cheerful hippo's teeth.
How to play Hippo Brush
- Open Hippo Brush and pick a control: hand in front of the camera, finger on a touch screen, or a mouse.
- Move back and forth over the wiggly gunk on the hippo's teeth.
- Keep scrubbing until all 12 teeth are clean and the hippo shows a sparkling smile.
In Adventure goal mode there is no timer. Kids finish when every tooth is clean. Timed challenge gives a 90-second round to play for a high score.
Turn it into a brushing routine
- Hippo first, then you: clean the hippo's teeth, then head to the bathroom to clean your own.
- Talk it through: "Did you get the back teeth? The hippo needed every tooth clean, and so do you."
- Mirror the motion: the American Dental Association suggests brushing twice a day, gently moving the brush back and forth in short, tooth-wide strokes. That's a motion kids just practiced on the hippo.
- Make it a ritual: one Hippo Brush round after pajamas, before brushing.
What Hippo Brush is, and isn't
It's a playful warm-up and conversation starter. It doesn't replace real brushing, a dentist's advice, or a parent's help with brushing technique for young children.
